Nevada Vehicle Registration Changes that Commonly Require Action
A registration record review is appropriate when any of the following events occur:
- A physical or mailing address change.
- A legal name change occurs.
- The registration certificate, license plate decal, or certificate of title contains incorrect information.
- A vehicle is purchased or acquired from a Nevada dealer, an out-of-state dealer, a private party, or by gift or family transfer.
- A vehicle registered in another state is brought into Nevada upon establishment of residency.

An updated registration certificate is optional after an address change; the new address may be written on the existing certificate, and a replacement certificate or decal costs $5 per vehicle. Address changes for off-highway vehicles are processed by mail only, using the instructions on the OHV 010 form, and are not handled at DMV offices. Nevada Name Changes and Title-Linked Corrections

The DMV requires the full legal name on all DMV documents and uses the name exactly as it appears on the document authorizing the change. The name change directs an applicant to bring the legal document authorizing the change, such as a certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order, or other qualifying document; a Nevada Evidence of Insurance showing the new name; and the current registration certificate to a DMV office. The name on the Nevada Evidence of Insurance must match the registration record, because coverage is verified electronically through the Nevada Liability Insurance Validation Electronically (NV LIVE) system.
A name change alone does not require a new certificate of title, but the DMV recommends updating the title when possible. Adding or removing a named owner requires changes to both the title and the registration, and the lienholder must approve the change, refinance the loan, or release the lien before a new title is issued.
