Nevada License Plate Lookup /Inspection for Tags Renewal

Do I Need an Inspection To Renew My Tags in Nevada?

Nevada does not mandate safety inspections as part of tag renewal, but the state operates a comprehensive emissions control program that requires annual emissions testing for qualifying vehicles registered in specific counties.

Emissions testing is required for passenger cars, trucks, recreational vehicles, and motor homes that meet all of the following criteria:

  • Based in the urban areas of Clark or Washoe County
  • Gasoline or light-duty diesel powered
  • 1968 model year or newer

When you renew your registration in Nevada, the state issues a registration certificate and a validation decal to be placed on your license plate. These registration decals display the month and year of registration expiration and must be affixed to the upper right-hand corner of the rear license plate. The decal indicates that your vehicle registration is current and valid for the specified registration period.

Exemptions and Special Circumstances

The following are exempt from Nevada's emissions testing requirements, as outlined by the Nevada DMV Emission Control Program:

  • New motor vehicles being registered for the first, second, or third registration cycle
  • Hybrid-electric vehicles five model years or newer
  • Vehicles manufactured in 1967 or older
  • Motorcycles, mopeds, and most tri-mobiles
  • Vehicles based in remote areas of Clark and Washoe counties and all other Nevada counties
  • Vehicles powered exclusively by propane, compressed natural gas, or electric power
  • Diesel vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating greater than 14,000 pounds
  • Vehicles registered as Classic Rod, Classic Vehicle, or Old Timer and driven 5,000 miles or less per year
  • Vehicles certified by the Department as a Replica Vehicle
